One of the Best Horse Racing Tips

One of the best horse racing tips that depends solely on the actions of the other bettors is to observe when a horse is bet way down from its morning line odds and STAYS there.

Usually when a horse opens up at low odds once the betting period commences as compared from its morning line, it then gradually floats up to a point that is closer to that morning line. In this case, it is difficult to tell how that horse is going to perform. It usually means that somebody thinks they know something - whether they really do is another question.

Conversely, a horse may open up at rather high odds in the betting and then gradually get bet down below its morning line. This also may or may not mean something.

For both of these cases in which a horse is backed more heavily early or late in the betting period, I have observed horses to both succeed and fail for long enough that these observations alone are not enough to say that "somebody knows something", though it probably does mean that the horse will outrun its morning line. Its just not enough information to be taken on its own.

There is, however, one case in which I have found tote board patterns to provide one of the best horse racing tips out there, and that is when a horse is bet down early, and STAYS there.

To illustrate the point, last Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Santa Anita Race Track in Race #5, a horse named Brushburn was bet way down from its morning line of 12-1.

The graphic above indicates the betting activity within the first 5 minutes of the betting period. Usually what will happen is such a horses odds will float up closer to the morning line (even if not going quite that high). But his odds stayed at 3-1 the entire betting period and indeed closed at 3-1. Needless to say, the horse won, beating the favorite.

In summary, it is generally not a good idea to base handicapping decisions on the toteboard, because the bettor is really admitting that he trusts anothers judgement over his own.

But sometimes, when a horse is bet low and STAYS low until the odds close, an occurence which does not happen very often, in my experience, it is one of the best horse racing tips that can be got without doing any research on the actual horse, and just might indicate that "somebody knows something".
