Garrett Gomez obviously thought highly enough of Dunkirk, who is a $3.7 million purchase from the 2007 Keeneland sale, to fly out from California to ride him in a Gulfstream Park allowance race. His gamble paid off.
The field of 10 broke cleanly and Gomez and his mount, breaking from post 8 were forwardly placed but got caught about six wide turning onto the backstretch. Up the backstretch, he settled nicely in fifth position about three lengths off pacesetters Jet Set Vinny and Alma d’Oro.
As they made their way around the far turn, Gomez began to steadily move the attractive grey up to the leaders so that by the quarter pole he had taken a narrow lead.
In the stretch he began to draw off gradually to an impressive 4-3/4 length win. The final time for the 1 1/8 miles was 150.15.
The Florida Derby on March 28th is reported to be the next likely target for this son of Unbridled Song.
He earned a 98 Beyer for his effort which certainly puts him in the 2009 Kentucky Derby hunt.
