Winslow Homer Captures Holy Bull Stakes
Winslow Homer Captures Holy Bull Stakes January 23, 2010 Winslow Homer held off a strong rally by 8/5 favorite Jackson Bend in the stretch to capture Saturday's $150,000 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Winslow Homer, a gray roan colt who actually bears a resemblance to Holy Bull himself, came into the race off of a 12 1/2 length romp in the slop at Philadelphia Park. His odds closed at 7/2 and probably would have gone off at even lower odds had his last effort been over a dry surface. | | Winslow Homer After Capturing Holy Bull |
Piscatelli, Aikenite, and Jackson Bend vied for the early lead, and were soon joined by Thank U Phillipe who made his way up the rail. Winslow Homer, meanwhile, settled several lengths off the pace. Turning into the stretch Winslow Homer was just one length off of Homeboy Kris and Jackson Bend, and just needed running room, which soon opened up for him. Jackson Bend could not get by him however, and Winslow Homer prevailed by 3/4 of a length. Jackson Bend had his five race winnning streak stopped but still acquitted himself nicely here and will certainly be a factor on the 2010 Triple Crown trail. William's Kitten finished a well beaten third, outrunning Thank U Phillipe, Homeboy Kris, and Aikenite who all finished noses apart. Homeboy Kris and Aikenite both disappointed his backers, who sent them off at 5-1 and 4-1 odds, respectively, finishing6th, in front of Homeboy Kris The final time over a fast track was 1:35.97
