Kentucky Derby Pie

The Kentucky Derby Pie was created in 1950 by George Kern at the Melrose Inn in Prospect, Kentucky. The dessert proved to be so popular that it was registered as a trademark in 1968 and since then they have been the only ones to bake and distribute the product.

The recipe is said to be known only to the Kern family. However, various news reporters have managed to discover a few facts about the Derby Pie. It has a chocolate filling and is known to contain English walnuts, chocolate chips, and vanilla. Every news piece about the Derby Pie seems to indicate that the recipe is the most jealously guarded secrets since Colonel Sanders chicken recipe.

The Derby Pie website says that "'They can call it chocolate nut pie," he says. "They can call it thoroughbred pie, nutty-gooey pie, Kentucky pie or race horse pie. As long as they don't call it Derby Pie."

The Kern family says that over 50,000 Derby Pies are sold in the month preceding the Kentucky Derby (traditionally the first Saturday in May).

If you are planning on throwing a Kentucky Derby Party, Derby Pie is a must. They will even deliver it straight to your door.
