The 2010 Kentucky Derby Post Time is 6:24 pm ET and will be run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on May 1, and will be the 136th running of what is known around the world as The Run for the Roses.

NBC will be carrying exclusive television coverage of the first leg of the Triple Crown, with programming set to begin at 5 pm ET/4pm CT. The network will feature about an hour of pre-race excitement before the race will start, which is open only to three-year-olds and features a $2 million purse, largest of the three Triple Crown races, the others being the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.

The timeframe for the Triple Crown was at one time in it's long and storied history something that was not rigid, but in the modern era of thoroughbred racing that is no longer the case. The Kentucky Derby is always the first of the series, is run on dirt at a mile and a quarter, and is always run at historic Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May.

The Preakness Stakes is always the second in line, is run at a mile and three/sixteenths, and is run two Saturdays following the Run for the Roses at Pimlico in Baltimore. The final leg of the Triple Crown, and perhaps the most difficult to win, is the Belmont Stakes, which is run at a mile and a half on dirt, and is always run on the third Saturday following the Preakness Stakes.

The 136th running of the Kentucky Derby should feature exciting racing action as the best three-year-olds from around the world compete for the hefty $2 million purse and try for a spot in the record books as a Kentucky Derby winner. The Kentucky Derby is not like the Super Bowl, the World Series, or the NBA Finals, where teams have the chance to get there year after year. The Kentucky Derby is open only to 3-year-old horses, and therefore, horses that run in the Kentucky Derby have just one chance in their lives to win, and that's what makes it so special.
