Nicanor, the Brother of Barbaro (aka BOB) may not have been channeling the spirit of his famous deceased brother, but he did improve significantly in his second race after a disappointing debut. He stumbled at the start in his debut and came up totally empty, but he got away cleanly this time and went straight for the front.
Off the disappointing effort last time in which he closed at 5-2 odds, the bettors sent him off at 8-1 odds this time, but this time he ran more like a 5-2 shot!
Watch Barbaro's Brother's Second Race Here
The favorite was named Custom for Carlos and closed at .70-1 odds and certainly looked the horse to beat on paper, and by the eighth pole the favorite had overtaken BOB by a length it looked as if Nicanor was done, but the gallant spirit of his now deceased brother kicked in as he courageously re-rallied and actually gained on the favorite in the last sixteenth of a mile, coming up short by a length to finish in second place.
It was a full 5 ¼ lengths back to the third place finisher which certainly bodes well for Barbaro’s Brother. That indicates that he will not likely be a maiden much longer. He may not turn out to be the superstar that his famous deceased brother was, but it was encouraging to see that BOB is not the dud that some feared he might be after that debut race.
He still has plenty of time to improve and we will continue our BOB watch.
