Old Fashioned cruised to a 7 1/4 length victory in the Remsen Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct racetrack on Saturday and remained undefeated in three career starts.
Never seriously challenged, the attractive gray-roan son of Unbridled Song went straight to the front, set a comfortable first quarter of 24.41 and never looked back, winning under wraps the final 1/8 of a mile. He went off at odds of .75-1 and won as the odds suggested he should.
He stopped the clock in 150.33 on a track labeled fast, but that was playing a little on the slow side. The time was a full 1.38 seconds faster (or about 7-8 lengths faster) than Springfield ran in winning The Demoiselle (G2) 30 minutes earlier.
It is always a good sign when the Remsen winner runs at least a few lengths faster than the Demoiselle Stakes (the fillies version of the Remsen) winner, which is traditionally run right before the Remsen.
Old Fashioned appeared to have had plenty in the tank. He ran his final 1/8 of a mile in 12.22 seconds, suggesting the extra furlong of the 1 ¼ mile Kentucky Derby will be no problem whatsoever. On the basis of this performance, Old Fashioned has surely stamped himself as one of the early favorites for the 2009 Kentucky Derby.
